What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy has been used in the UK for over 200 years and it’s origins date back to ancient Greece. It is one of the two most widely used forms of medicine in the world today.

More and more people are discovering the benefits of an individualised approach to treatment.

Homeopathy is a complete system of medicine that considers you as an individual and treats your physical and emotional symptoms.

Homeopathy can be effectively used to to treat a wide range of problems from sore throats and toothache to chronic illnesses such as:arthritis, eczema.asthma, anxiety and insomnia.

Homeopaths believe that the the mind and body operate as one and chose medicines to fit all the characteristics of a patient. Physical disorders are considered in relation to the individuals’s mental and emotional state and vis versa.

The system only became formalised by a German doctor called Samuel Hahnemann who became disillusioned with contemporary medical practice which at that time was not only crude but often injurious to the patient.

He was working on a translation of Cinchona bark (derivative of Quinine) and realised that this was one of the few effective cures for malaria around at that time. He was curious about why it could be so effective in treating certain kinds of fever.

He  discovered that if taken by a healthy person it can produce symptoms similar to the sicknesses and fevers it could cure. Putting it crudely, this observation has been around in folk lore for a long time, with expressions such as ‘a little of what you fancy does you good’,or ‘the hair of the dog’ analogy, but Hahnemann has given such truths, scientific validity.

When consulting a professional homeopath you will find time is taken to listen to your emotional and and physical symptoms so that they can build up a picture of your whole state in relation to your problem.

The homeopath uses their knowledge and experience to identify which symptoms are key to your case and will select a remedy.

Homeopathy operates on the principle that “like cures like”;in other words,a substance that would produce a set of symptoms can also be used in minute potentised doses (Homeopathic Doses) to treat these symptoms.

A simple example is the remedy Allium cepa (Onion),which is often used successfully to treat colds and hay fever where the main symptoms are runny eyes and nose.

This is somewhat different to the orthodox approach. For example:a patient may come with headaches but these could be related to stress, hormone imbalances, poor diet, inflammation and a variety of other causes.

Substances which are used as homeopathic medicines have been taken by healthy individuals and any effects are carefully recorded. In this way we know what effect a substance has,the symptoms it is capable of producing and therefore what it might be capable of curing.

The details are very precise and because of this approach homeopathic medicine is effective for children and babies, acute illnesses and fevers and is useful as adjunctive treatment in first aid situations.

Homeopathic medications are free from toxins and chemicals and are a safe treatment for many forms of illnesses and diseases. They successfully treats a wide variety of both physical and psychological problems.
